In the latest TV block we get some comedy and action. Up first is What’s Happening Seasons 1 & 2. The show was a 70s staple that showed African-Americans growing up like everyone else. Sure we all think of Rerun today because of his dance and moves, but Raj and Dee were just as popular back in the day. Rewatching it for the first time in probably decades, the show holds up pretty well. It tackled all the issues similar shows talked about back then and it did with heart (which today’s shows seem to forget). There’s lots of family jokes and jokes about kids and just life. Stand out issues include Roger shooting dice to get his mom a gift, cheating on a speech so Rerun can play football, the Stevie Wonder concert, the underground newspaper in Season 2 and of course the church TV episode which I totally remembered.
Next is Tour of Duty Season 1. I’ve always liked military shows and I remember watching this one as a kid as well. Vietnam wasn’t so far behind us at the time so it still felt pretty fresh. Stand out episodes are the bridge episode with the special forces group, Caffrey losing his sight after the Jeep accident, and Goldman being shot and learning the truth about Nikki Raines. If you remember the show, it’s a good rewatch.
Last we have The Three Stooges on Blu-ray for the first time. Sure these are kind of movies, but to me the Stooges are TV because I grew up watching them on TV. These new triple feature Blu-rays are pretty sweet. The transfer is pretty impressive and they picked some solid features for the first 2 volumes. My favorite out of the collection is The Three Stooges Meet Hercules. That was always one of my favorites growing up and I really enjoyed seeing it in HD. That set also features The Outlaws is Coming and The Three Stooges Go Around the World in a Daze. The other volume includes Time Out for Rhythm, Rockin’ in the Rockies and Have Rocket Will Travel. If you are Stooges fan, get these on Blu-ray today!
