Oscar Winners Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth deliver riveting performances in this tense thriller based on the best-selling novel that features a shocking twist ending you will never see coming.
Kidman plays Christine, a woman who wakes up every day remembering nothing. But when she tries to piece together her former life, she uncovers terrifying secrets that leave her with no one she can trust, including her doctor (Mark Strong) and even her husband (Firth).
What We Thought:
Apparently Before I Go To Sleep is based on a popular novel, but I had never actually heard of it before this movie came along.
Which I think is kind of a good thing. This is a movie that predicates on surprises and not knowing what’s coming. I think having read the book would have lessened the impact of watching the movie.
For the most part, Before I Go to Sleep is a by-the-numbers amnesiac thriller. That said, it’s raised above much of the genre by the incredibly strong performances by the three leads, Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth, and Mark Strong.
The film wears its Hitchcock influences on its sleeve (not that that’s a bad thing), and while the twists and turns aren’t all that surprising, there is a nice sense of not knowing what’s going to happen while you’re watching it.
I wouldn’t say this is a must see, but if you’re a thriller junkie like I am, it’s definitely worth a watch.
