There is a slew of action, horror, crime dramas coming out of late so here’ s a breakdown of some of the newest releases. First we have Zarra’s Law. Tony Sirico plays a wise guy type. Brendan Fehr (remember him from Roswell?) plays a lawyer. It’s as generic as a mafia type movie gets. It’s not awful or anything, it just might be a bit forgettable. Although I gotta admit, Fehr wasn’t that bad. Reminded me of Once Upon a Time in Queens, a very light mobster type movie.
Next is Born of War. Man is this generic. When did action movies become as one dimensional as horror flicks? This has a female lead, but that’s about the only thing different than every other straight to DVD snoozer. Of course there’s terrorists in the Middle East and twists and overly choreographed fight scenes and I’m asleep. The lead in it is attractive, but that’s about all I remember about it and I just watched it a few hours ago.
For the horror part of this article we have Dark Mountain. This is such a Blair Witch Project rip off it even references the Blair Witch in it. Couple of people go looking for something, there’s some shaky cam nonsense, they find more than they bargained for and I don’t care. I didn’t care about the characters or what happened to them. I hated the movie it was ripping off so I certainly hated this thing.
Sticking with horror we have In The House of Flies. Have you seen Saw or any of its sequels? How about any of the clones that flooded the horror market afterwards? Well then you’ve seen this. Two people are kidnapped and trapped with no way out. Someone is watching them and calling them and forcing them to do things. About the only thing that stands out here is Henry Rollins as the voice on the phone.
Last we have Bad Turn Worse. This is hands down the best of the group. It’s nothing all that original either, but Mark Pellegrino is always good. It’s very dark, but doesn’t start out as dark. You can say the bad does turn worse. At first I’m thinking it’s like Hellion, but with older kids, but then Pellegrino gets involved and it’s get dark like Cheap Thrills. It’s a pretty solid film and the only movie here that I would watch again. If you think Pellegrino is an underrated actor like me, check this one out.
