Also new from Mill Creek are some favorite classic television shows. First we have Soap Seasons 1 & 2. Man what a show. You know how a show like Desperate Housewives just got completely ridiculous? Well Soap made fun of it over 30 years ago! The show spoofed all the over the top soap operas that were TV mainstays. With a cast that included Richard Mulligan (who would later star in Empty Nest), Robert Guillaume (who would later get his own show which I’ll talk about in a bit), Catherine Helmond (Mona on Who’s the Boss?) and Billy Crystal, the show was pure comic genius. Yup THAT Billy Crystal by the way. Nothing was off limits whether it was family issues, the Church, sex changes and killing. And again, this originally aired in the 1970s! It was way ahead of its time. Some stand out storylines including trying to convert a homosexual, suicide, the Mob, a pregnancy and pretty much everyone sleeping with everyone else. All with an awesome voice over by Rod Roddy. This show was great, re-watch seasons 1 & 2 now.
Also out is Benson Seasons 1 & 2. Benson was a spin off of Soap with Robert Guillaume’s character of Benson getting his own show. Benson leaves and is sent out to butler for a governor. Guillaume was fantastic and you can clearly see why this show worked out as well as it did outside Soap. It’s kind of like The Nanny or Mr. Belvedere meets The West Wing. There’s lots of family issues, but also some politics. Stand out storylines include the daughter sneaking out to see KISS, Benson being mistaken (and almost killed) for an African president, the governor’s mansion being bugged, the Soviets almost going to war with us after a missing Chess prodigy, Kraus trying to pass a citizen test, and one of my favorite episodes, Benson trying to fly a plane after the pilot got sick.
Both shows are now available through Mill Creek in Season 1 & 2 Combo packs at great prices. You can’t go wrong revisiting two classic TV shows.
